This multi-stakeholder discussion will examine the trade and investment dynamics now shaping critical minerals value chains across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), including geopolitical rivalry, resource competition and the absence of benefit-sharing mechanisms, and what these dynamics imply for the region’s collective bargaining position.

The session will present findings and recommendations from the FFA network’s research, with particular attention to trade governance, benefit sharing and local value addition, and the distance between sustainability narratives and the substantive content of emerging trade agreements, Memorandum of Understandings (MoUs) and the financing behind them. The discussion will also generate input to inform future workstreams under ASEAN Senior Officials Meeting on Minerals (ASOMM) and ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on Minerals (AMMin), and the anticipated Declaration on ASEAN Critical Minerals.

Hosted by Fair Finance Asia’s (FFA) Investing and Financing Outcomes in Regional Ecosystems and Sustainable Trade (I-FOREST), this multi-stakeholder roundtable discussion will identify the principal cross-border financial issues arising in Mekong trade corridors for deforestation-linked commodities, including trade data that cannot be independently verified, trade finance extended without environmental or social conditions, and financial institution policies that do not follow clients across borders.

The discussion will also examine the implications for smallholder producers, including whether emerging traceability and due diligence requirements are integrating them into compliant supply chains or displacing them from the trade altogether.
