On August 28, 2024, Fair Finance Asia (FFA) and Influencing Just Energy Transition in Asia (I-JET) will launch a Just Energy Transition (JET) Toolkit at the 2nd Southeast Asia Collaborative Convening of CSOs on JET Regional Convening to be held from August 27-29 in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
Session Background
Climate change is a major global challenge, causing droughts, floods, wildfires, and heatwaves that impact communities and livelihoods. The energy sector, reliant on fossil fuels like oil, coal, and gas, significantly contributes to this crisis through harmful greenhouse gas emissions.
While high-income countries are major industrial polluters, the rapid economic growth in many Asian countries has also increased global emissions due to their reliance on coal. Initiatives like the Paris Agreement aim to reduce emissions and promote a shift to renewable energy, such as wind and solar. However, progress has been slow, and unsustainable practices persist, particularly in Asia.
To shift the debates and policy environment on the just energy transition (JET) in the region, FFA and IJET have developed a JET Toolkit, which will provide information and resources to civil society organizations (CSOs) and grassroots organizations advocating for JET in Asia. The toolkit also aims to serve as a repository of JET-related recommendations that can strengthen the commitments of governments, energy and climate policymakers, financial regulators, private financial institutions, multilateral development banks (MDBs), and energy companies to uphold social, environmental, and human rights standards in the region’s energy transition. As a living platform, the toolkit will be updated regularly to capture relevant JET developments in the region.
Session Objectives
Conducted as a presentation, this session will aim to:
- Introduce the JET Policy Toolkit: Highlight the toolkit’s purpose, key messages, and how it can be utilized by stakeholders, particularly CSOs.

- Engage Participants: Foster a dialogue among CSOs and other stakeholders to gather feedback and promote collaborative efforts in advocating for a just energy transition in Asia.
